Help identify defective part (power supply, graphics card or mouse)
Hi everyone,
I was away on vacation for ten days and returned yesterday evening. My system was functioning perfectly before that.
When I powered it back on and began using it, the system suddenly went black and restarted quickly while I was working in an office setting. This incident occurred three times during a 20-minute meeting.
Hardware details:
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX
- SPARE GPU: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1070 AMP Extreme
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D
- Motherboard: ROG STRIX X670E-E GAMING Wifi
- RAM: Kingston Fury Beast KF560C36BBEK2-64 (2x 32GB)
- Power Supply: be quiet! Straight Power 12 850W
To try to identify the problem, I ran several diagnostics:
Windows Memory Diagnostics – passed
CPU OCCT Normal Variable test for 1 hour – passed
Power OCCT Power Test on both GPUs for 1 hour – passed
Attempts:
1. Failed after 36 seconds into the test
2. Failed after 1 minute and 17 seconds
I connected the power supply to the main RAM instead of the GPU.
Power OCCT Power Test on Integrated GPU for 1 hour – passed
Power OCCT Power Test on RX 7900 XTX – failed after 1 minute and 32 seconds
GPU 3D Adaptive Test on both GPUs: variable, all GPUs, between 10-60% load, 4% increase in 30 seconds. For a full hour it failed after 5 minutes and 6 seconds.
GPU 3D Adaptive Test on Integrated GPU – variable, all GPUs, 10-60%, 4% rise in 30 seconds. For an hour it stopped working.
Final results: SUCCES with no errors overall.
Possible causes I considered:
- Temperature might not be the issue (check temperatures at crash time via OCCT CRASH-TMP)
- Memory tests also passed, so it’s unlikely RAM is faulty
- The problem could be related to PCIe GPU stability rather than the integrated GPU
- Potential issues with PSU or motherboard connectivity
Thoughts: It seems the GPU might have been affected, but I didn’t re-test the RX 7900 XTX and assumed it would fail. I swapped the old GPU for a newer one, updated drivers, and everything worked again.
Graphical performance became extremely slow and unstable, resulting in a bizarre BSOD (see screenshot). The system wouldn’t boot after that.
Motherboard LEDs lit red for DRAM or CPU (though I initially thought it was only the CPU).
I removed the 1070 and reinstalled the latest drivers.
After that, the graphics became noticeably sluggish.
This was the most unusual error I’ve seen in a long time.
Help needed: Any guidance on next steps?
PSU type? Switching from AMD GPU to NVIDIA generally needs DDU usage. Monitor CPU and GPU temps.
I experienced a comparable problem with my computer due to defective RAM, preventing it from booting. Could you provide details about your RAM setup? Specifically, how many sticks are there and what the total gigabytes are?
Accidentally typed my message before completing it. I'll do DDU and re-enter the 1070 again.
CPU/GPU temperatures weren't the problem—check the update in the post with GPU/CPU temps during the crash.
PSU is quiet! Running on Power 12 850W (platinum).
RAM is 64 GIG in 2x 32GB config.
Pretty confident it's not a RAM issue. Did both OCCT and Windows memory stability and diagnostic testing which were fine.
