I own two Windows 10 machines and one 2008 Mac Pro. The laptop is linked to the Mac Pro through Ethernet, allowing it to function as a server. The Mac Pro has two Ethernet ports, yet when I connect the SFF desktop (Dell OptiPlex 960), the network settings don’t recognize the Mac at all, whereas the laptop works perfectly.

Have you attempted sending a ping using the IP address and then trying to access the network share via that IP? It appears the problem might be related to DNS.

There are a few issues if the devices are linked directly. First, your NIC must support crossover; some models do, others don’t. If not, use a crossover cable or switch. Second, you need to assign an IP address—systems often generate one automatically, but it’s safer to set one manually in network settings.
