HELP!
Hello everyone, I'm new to all this tech stuff, so please forgive my lack of clarity. I enjoy simulator racing and am considering upgrading my CPU. Right now I have an i7-6700k on an Asus Z170-E. The top option I can get is the i7-7700k. I have two questions: Is that a significant upgrade worth the £80 price tag? Or would you suggest a more affordable motherboard-CPU combo that still offers a good performance boost? Thanks in advance!
The price of £80 7700K seems too high. A newer model around £20 more would likely perform better, though it would require a replacement motherboard. Updated info: the 12100F is cheaper in the UK now about £70 – https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/grhF...071512100f. A 6-core 12400F for around £100 might fit the budget – https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/pQNx...071512400f. If you need a motherboard, options start at £120 – https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/yMGb...-wifi-ddr4
In short, if you're planning to upgrade, go with an AM4 setup. Although it's outdated hardware, your current 7th generation Intel chip is quite old. An eBay seller is selling a CPU and motherboard combo for 120 quid (link), which only needs RAM and a cooler. A basic AMD cooler works fine (15 quid: link) and you can add two 16GB DDR4 RAM sticks for 40 pounds each (£40) to build a solid system without spending much. The bundle includes an integrated GPU, so it functions more like an APU with better graphics than your existing Intel setup. HTH!
