It's actually a CMOS battery, so they don't require one to start up or a hard drive. Make sure you're using the right charger—at least 16V and 3A minimum. Otherwise, the backlight might have failed. You can test it by shining a flashlight at the screen from an angle while it's on and checking for any issues. They were known for this feature if you're familiar with it.

It supports an official IBM Power Brick and functions with other ThinkPad models. No decision-making lights are present.
