HDR terminology?
I have a monitor that supports basic HDR (DisplayHDR™ 400 certified). I'm trying to understand some HDR terms. My screen is an ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQL1A, and here are its key specs: brightness in HDR mode is 400 cd/m², typical brightness is around 350 cd/m². The question is whether peak brightness equals HDR maximum luminance and if normal brightness matches HDR brightness. Also, I need to confirm details for Horizon Forbidden West on Windows 11.
Sadly, the low-end HDR label is misleading and incorrect. They might just accept an HDR signal without actually being HDR displays. It’s better for them to recognize HDR signals but not treat themselves as true HDR monitors—ideally stick to SDR instead.
The key measurement to assess HDR compatibility is the contrast ratio. OLEDs and QLEDs typically offer a 1M:1 ratio, meaning many HDR screens reach only 1000:1. Understanding backlight complexity helps distinguish between grey and black pixels in HDR contexts. Without proper calibration, achieving the needed contrast often results in washed-out images. Some displays claim a 'DCR contrast ratio' for HDR, but I wouldn't depend on that as a reliable sign of true HDR performance.
Device capabilities are limited because makers conceal key details (such as a high brightness level but only for a small portion of the display). To grasp what truly excellent HDR looks like, you must understand the requirements. Also, achieving even mediocre HDR on edge-lit screens is challenging. You’re better off with OLED displays or systems with multiple zones. Perfect HDR is still a concept. There’s one technology that excels in bright areas but struggles in dim ones, and another that performs well in darker scenes but not as much in bright environments.
