It seems like Capcom deserves more recognition for their HDR work in Resident Evil 8, especially since it stands out among most titles. Usually, HDR can make images appear duller in games like Hitman 3 and Sekiro, but here it enhances the visuals significantly. In this game, both bright and dark scenes look much more vivid when HDR is active. The developers should share their strategy for art direction at the Game Developers Conference, as this implementation truly lets HDR shine. This is the first time I’ve played a game where HDR feels natural and impressive. HDR is clearly the future, just like ray tracing—don’t be surprised if it becomes standard.

Hdr works well in most games when the system runs smoothly. Windows' hdr setup is often subpar compared to other options. It can sometimes distort colors completely or prevent you from selecting a 16:9 width. But GG has helped make it function properly.

Yeah, I don't know if it has to do with Windows. I only tried it in Hitman 3 and Sekiro, so I can't really say if its good in most games. In those two games it looks atrocious. Resident Evils isn't perfect either, but it looks superb compared to most games, as close to perfect as I've seen it so far.

That’s something that should likely get improved in Windows 11. HDR looks good only when the system supports it properly. I noticed the distinction clearly on my phone screen.

Yeah, I can see it on my phone. Tremendous difference between the two. It brings the scenes to life like I've never seen it do before. Hopefully Microsoft gets their act together with Win 11's HDR implementation. I'm sure they've gotten plenty of complaints about it.

It seems similar to other REs, it could be impressive briefly but mostly distracting in the long run. The candy poop colors were quite noticeable in my detailed horror gameplay. Recordings with HDR are washed out and hardly useful. I haven’t managed to find a solution even on YouTube that supports HDR streaming. Overall, I’d rate HDR 4 out of 10 right now.

The game performed well in SDR, yet the screenshots suggest they handled HDR nicely. Unfortunately, my TV is too distant for gaming, but I’d enjoy playing it again in HDR format. It seems they’re likely converting or recording to SDR instead of capturing HDR directly. A 4/10 rating isn’t unreasonable given that recording HDR isn’t possible.

If I could capture it, it would score around 5 out of 10. I also don’t like the overly saturated colors. The games I tried—RE2, RE3, and another one—I found it too bright, almost unrealistic at night, though it was very bright during the day. It looks decent, but overall it feels too intense and the wow factor faded quickly.

HDR focuses on the display, which doesn't influence overall performance.
