I'm using a 10700k and a Vega 64 AIO with a 1.4 DisplayPort cable. I need to try enabling 4K HDR at 120Hz, but Windows only lets me at 4K at 60Hz. I bought a new DisplayPort cable—does this work with HDMI 2.0 or 21? How can I get HDR 4K at 120Hz on Windows?
4K at 120Hz with 10-bit HDR demands 40Gbits of data flow, while 12-bit colors need the complete 48 Gbits offered by HDMI 2.1. Only HDMI 2.1 supports native handling of this resolution and refresh speed. HDMI 2.0 or DP 1.4 restrict you to 4K at 60Hz with 8-bit color depth. Most high-refresh gaming panels rely on DP 1.4a with DSC or chroma subsampling to achieve such rates at 4K.
He likely refers to a TV with 4K 120Hz HDR, which is why HDMI is used instead of DP. Also, DP 1.4 can't support native 4K 120Hz 10-bit HDR without chroma subsampling or DSC—only NVIDIA RTX 2000 or AMD RX 5000 cards and newer meet that requirement.
It seems I’ll have to wait for the latest AMD graphics cards. I doubt Vega 64 supports HMDI 2.0, but I can use a 4K 120Hz display and it performs well for AOE 2 DE. I also get a 120fps frame rate all day long.
New AMD and NVIDIA GPUs are set to include HDMI 2.1 support with a minimum of one port. The 3070, 3080, and 3090 models already have at least one full 48Gbit/s HDMI 2.1 connection. Certain AiB variants, such as the Asus TUF 3080, even feature two of these ports. Looking forward to fully utilizing my 3080 with my 4K 120Hz 12-bit HDR TV.
Could benefit from adding more funds, though it may work as a server using all those SATA ports on an X99-UD3 instead of the P variant.
If you can find a use for it, sure. But i personally don't see the point for a home server unless you have important data which should be backed up regularly. I'd just sell it and take the money.
