I recently purchased a Dell OptiPlex for $42 on eBay. It comes with a 500GB SSD and a 7200rpm HDD, running Windows 10 Pro. After about 25 minutes, it’s still not working properly and seems like the hard drive is faulty.

It seems Windows is updating automatically. Adjust your network settings to treat it as a limited connection so updates don’t happen without charge. Restart the system and it should work properly. You might want to invest in a 240GB SSD like the Kingston V300 or A400—these are affordable and very dependable.

Even though an HDD isn't the quickest option for Windows 10, you can still attempt to reset the system to its original settings. It's also worth considering that the drive might be aging and could benefit from replacement.

Also, a $42 price tag for an Optiplex seems to point toward a Core2Duo setup. These systems are mostly functional only for light tasks like a few tabs; even then, launching programs would be slow. YouTube streams would look poor at 720p, and running a speed test wouldn’t give accurate results. If this is indeed a Core2Duo, investing in a Core2Quad Q6600 would be worth the $7. It significantly boosts CPU performance across all Core2Duo models. For example, applying a BSEL mod can raise the CPU from 2.4GHz to 3.0GHz instantly. I own an Optiplex 755 that’s been using that mod for over six years. A $7 purchase on eBay is a smart choice, especially since you’re in California. She still has a dual-core processor, though I think it’s more than sufficient. I’m considering moving to 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD later, and I’m curious about running Windows 10 with the key printed on top.
