Confirm your setup: are you placing the HDD in a 3.5" bay or a 2.5" bay? Your 3.5" bays are likely covered by the PSU, while the 2.5" bays sit on the front of the motherboard tray.

I tested every possible angle. It's a 3.5" HDD and I'm attempting to fit it into the corresponding slot at the bottom of the case.

No, you should not place the HDD upside down with screws facing up. Doing so could damage the drive or the case.
