I attempted to reinstall Windows 7 on a friend's laptop, but encountered the message: "Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style." It turned out to be a minor issue I found solutions for. The main challenge is having to wipe the entire hard drive and format the partition where Windows was originally installed, which is difficult given my lack of experience. I’m wondering if there’s a way to transfer data from that partition to a USB flash drive using the console during installation—especially since the partition likely contains only around 7GB of files like pictures and documents.

I’d set up a live Linux environment, such as Ubuntu, and attempt to transfer files from a USB drive using that operating system.

Windows 7 doesn’t work on a GPT drive, but Windows 8 does. You’ll need to install Elementary OS on another flash drive, prepare the hard drive, and set it up as an MBR.

Installation prevents copying, but files on other partitions stay safe. Using a Linux live CD or USB is simple and quick.
