I have a Chromebook with a completely malfunctioning screen, hinges, and other components. Recently, I remembered a large over 2-hour video file named Screencast.web, exceeding 200mb, stored in my Google Drive. It seems that when I power off the device overnight, it sometimes restarts. While doing so, the screen would occasionally turn back on. When I scroll through the recording, it appears offline and disconnected from the internet. On the Chromebook, Wi-Fi disappears when it’s idle or closed. During the video, I see wallpaper options, saved podcasts, a default wallpaper, moving cursor, and eventually a Privacy & Security screen prompt asking to verify identity. The mouse moves repeatedly throughout. I’m unsure if this happened while the lid was closed or if the device clicked itself. No one has access to my Chromebook, so it’s possible it was compromised by malware or hacking. I’ve cleaned it with a power wash, but I have no clue how the recording occurred or what exactly took place. The presence of a password prompt suggests someone could control certain functions, though nothing significant happens afterward. I can’t share the video here due to its length.
Sound indicates someone is using the chromebook. If it's an outdated, unupdated model, it likely has many security flaws that users can take advantage of. The captured screen might simply be a mistake. Format and discontinue use if it's no longer supported.
The problem is no one had access to this chromebook. The recording was about an hour long, showing the time but not clear if it was morning or night. I was in the apartment during that time. Since I kept the lid closed on the device a lot, could I have pressed the record button before closing it? What happens when I close the lid and the screen just changes buttons? Is that possible? The main concern is the transition between scenes and the mouse cursor moving in the video. I’m certain no one accessed my Chromebook during this recording. If the video was recorded by accident, why is it in my Google Drive? I expected it to be in the downloads folder, but only if I uploaded it manually would it appear there. Also, with many Chrome tabs open, the device might have become unstable. Could that have caused the issue? Is there a way to share the video for others to review? The file is over 200mb and exceeds an hour.
