Have you encountered any routing challenges?
Hey everyone, I've been facing packet loss in several games over the last couple of weeks. I've reached out to my provider six times without any real resolution or helpful advice. A technician recently replaced my router and ONT, but the issue persists. It seems like routing problems might be the root cause. The only workaround I have is using a VPN, but it doesn't solve the problem completely. I'm frustrated because the communication has been unclear, and even if it were fully under their control, I'd still feel let down. Any ideas or alternatives would be greatly appreciated.
Discussing the impact of losses, the steps you took to resolve issues, and the actions others performed.
Over several hops, about 10-20% of the time, they swapped the ONT near my home, reset my lines multiple times (they also connected me to another line), and swapped out the router. Right now, using a VPN is my only option, though it only works when they’re cooperative.
Several hops away from noticing the issue, the VPN seems to be resolving it—likely not due to your ONT or even your provider. The equipment change appears to be just trying to satisfy the customer. I haven’t used it, but tools like PingPlotter could assist in pinpointing the problem.
Consider swapping the router if feasible. Consult others about borrowing one or reviewing local store return rules.
They seem to be trying to ease my concerns, but their fixes haven’t worked. The issues typically begin around hop 4, and level3 is causing some loss. After checking online, it appears related to ICMP requests. I’ve attached a screenshot of WinMTR, which has already been replaced, but the problem continues.
Looks like there is an issue with Level3. Thats outside your ISP's control possbily. It could be a congrested peering point. As in the link between your ISP and Level3 is too saturated. Thought you have Fronteir, and they are always on the edge of going out of business. They made some stupid choices when buying territory from Verizon.
The problem isn't with Level3 itself but with your gateway device or equipment connected to it. Observe the peaks—this might indicate network congestion on either side, though the effect isn’t severe. Don’t focus on packet loss on Level3; it’s often caused by ECMP issues where alternate routes aren’t responding publicly. Where did you begin detecting the packet loss? It could be from game monitoring or simply spotting lag spikes, then troubleshooting afterward.
It has been this situation for at least two months now. I initially assumed the issue was with the VPN but recently it’s become really slow and unreliable. In older versions of Apex Legends there were no network warnings, so I probably thought other players were struggling or the game was lagging. Now that I see the network indicators, I notice constant lag, freezing, and a general sluggish experience. With at least ten devices connected but only six actually working for light tasks like browsing, it’s clear something is wrong. After updating my hardware and adjusting my network settings, I tested with just my PC active—still the same problems. There are only two ISPs nearby, and one of them was very unstable, which led to switching to a new provider. It’s really frustrating when you feel ignored even though the issue seems beyond your control.
