Have a black screen and GPU fans running at maximum, but you're still stuck?
Hey everyone, here’s what I’ve got so far:
I’m running an ASUS ROG Strix Z690-F with a M.2 slot, a Nvidia 3080 Ti GPU, a Corsair Vengeance DDR5 32GB RAM (2x16GB), an Intel Core i7-12700K, and an EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 GT. My power supply is an 80 Plus Gold 1000W unit.
For a few weeks now, I’ve been using Stable Diffusion to create images for fun. This morning both monitors went black even though the PC was still powered on and YouTube kept playing. The GPU fans ran at full speed despite it not feeling very hot—though I couldn’t measure the temperatures. When I pressed the power button for 5 seconds, it stopped immediately. After turning it back on, I noticed a burning chemical smell for about two seconds before everything reset and the PC booted up normally.
I tried generating more images and it performed perfectly at full speed. I put the PC to sleep for work and came back later stuck with black screens—lights on, fans spinning at idle. My MOBO has a white light on VGA, which probably indicates a GPU error.
Any suggestions? Could it be that my GPU failed? I don’t think it overheated, it didn’t feel hot, and the temps were around 125–145°F during Stable Diffusion use. I removed the GPU, checked the connections, and everything looked intact.
Thanks for your help!
You probably identified the GPU as the issue. Inspect the power connector wiring and the socket where the power cable connects on the GPU for any visible signs of melting or a burnt odor. Then trace the power cable back to the PSU to see if the same problem exists there. Do you have someone with a PC who can test your GPU to determine if the GPU or the PCIe x16 slot is the problem?
I didn't get anyone sadly. Today I have an update. I left the GPU out of the PC overnight, woke up, plugged it back in, but still had black screens. However, I noticed the white VGA light turned off, so I turned off the PC, turned it back on, and everything worked again. Now that it's running, I'm worried about putting the PC to sleep once more. Should I run some benchmarks or is there anything else I should do while it's running?
consider trying to run the pc without a gpu or using an alternative one if you have one available.
it's conceivable that the GPU faced a brief thermal problem while generating the image, which triggered the fans to run at maximum speed and resulted in a burning odor. overheating poses a risk of harming parts, and it could have impacted the GPU's performance.
I attempted that last night, and everything functioned properly with the GPU off and monitors connected to MoBo directly. Currently, it seems to be working again when it's included.
just checked it out, i'm lagging behind on bios and chipset. will give it a shot!
updated chipset and pc required restart; it restarted but now shows white light on VGA with black displays. It shut down, unplugged, and then plugged back in—powering it on didn’t work. Displays won’t show unless the GPU is removed.
