He’s experiencing a problem where his 3TB hard drive seems to vanish and reappear, affecting his game drive. The boot SSD is 240GB and another 1TB drive works fine. The issue began today without clear cause. His system specs are: i7 4770K CPU, RX 580 GPU, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and an ASRock Z87 motherboard.

Determine if the storage device is internal or external. If internal, it may be nearing failure. If external, consider the drive, cable, controller, or power port issues.

I understand it might be deteriorating, but if you have another SATA cable, I’d switch to a different one and use a separate power connector from the PSU, just to eliminate any chance it’s an internal drive.

Download and set up crystaldiskinfo to check if the SMART information indicates an impending failure. I concur with the suggestion to swap out the SATA cable. It might also help to reinsert the SATA power cable.
