I often use the motherboard USB-C port to charge my phone. Today I was distracted, and I mistakenly plugged it in. The cable fit perfectly since it was made for that connection, and I didn’t notice anything unusual until later. Fortunately, nothing went wrong, and the port still functions normally with no signs of damage. I’m both concerned and curious—maybe nothing happened because the other side wasn’t connected yet?

That would be irrelevant. If the port still works and nothing broke, there's nothing to worry about.

Why? You got lucky and didn't short the power rail out. Be careful not to do that again, but if there's no damage and everything still works, don't sweat it.

It might look silly, but I became concerned because it didn’t shut down like the others I expected. I thought this meant my PC couldn’t recognize the damage and stopped to safeguard itself, which could lead to more harm. I’m probably overthinking, but I should be grateful for what’s working now.

There are many valid concerns and equally many unfounded ones. What’s important is that worry did occur, and that makes total sense. As AN mentioned, everything should be normal. As Needful advised, aim to prevent this scenario in the future—perhaps use a dedicated USBC cable that remains connected, or even better, opt for a wall wart and keep the PC and phone separate. Although it can be costly, most systems feature strong USB ports, and USB3 connections typically draw only 100mA when idle (a neat negotiation between device and port). This is far less than what the motherboard is built to safely manage, so actual damage risk remains minimal. Just avoid making it a regular habit.

Interesting tidbit: When my main PC was a laptop, I once mistakenly plugged a USB-A connector into the Ethernet port. It worked surprisingly well. Never experienced any issues. As for why it didn’t power down? Probably because I didn’t connect the power pin to ground properly (P1 to P4). After researching USB standards, it seems the pins are spaced about 7mm apart on a USB-A port, with a gap of roughly 6mm between inner edges. A USBC connector is wider at 8mm, but its flat side measures only 5mm—so effectively shorting them requires a slight angle adjustment.

Most reports claiming the PC shut down likely stem from survivorship bias. Those who encountered problems were the ones who noticed; those who didn’t had no trouble and moved on.

Thanks for clarifying everything, this was really helpful. I’ll definitely keep this in mind moving forward. Hopefully, I won’t have to deal with any issues soon. Just wanted to mention that I was about to stop talking, but I kept getting anxious after anything happened with my PC. I can’t afford an upgrade right now, and I was really worried that a small mistake might lead to serious problems—like damaged ports or even the whole motherboard if it happens.

Anxiety's a real pain, sorry you're dealing with it too. That's why I'm here. I'll look up some random rabbit holes to check out and share what I find. Hope anyone else can gain from this while I focus on balancing things out.
