Hey, you're planning to try Half-Life 1, then Half-Life 2, and finally 3. For Half-Life 1, do you have the original version or are there HD remakes or mods available? The same goes for Half-Life 2. Just let me know if you want recommendations beyond the free stuff!

For half life 1 there is Black mesa a remake of half life 1 on the source 2 engine. You need the original half life 1 on steam in order to play it though

An update for Half Life 2 was recently released on Steam, just a week ago. It’s unclear whether you need the original version or not. Honestly, I’d prefer to wait until Valve discounts start in the summer and purchase the full pack. There are many great games included, and the price typically drops around $25.

Original version is always the best. Avoid the Half-Life remake; it's terrible. Black Mesa is free but misses the end chapters.

Half Life is the best I've ever owned. The source I have is just a sad remake, so I recommend playing the original instead. If you want something better, try Blackmesa source—it's the top remake I've ever seen. Don't forget to add opposing force and blue shift; I don’t know your age, but back then, developers would sell new games as add-ons for 15 to 30 dollars. After those, give HL2 a try.
