I've been considering a system upgrade lately. Since I'm on a tight budget, I decided to go with the h610 chipset. It's not the top choice, but it should handle the task. There are some clear downsides, though. One question that keeps coming up is: if I connect a GPU using PCIe x16 and an expansion board via PCIe x4, can I still use NVMe for an SSD? From what I found about the MSI PRO H610M-G DDR4, they say adding an NVMe SSD might disable one of the SATA ports. So do NVMe work with a SATA-based chipset? Probably not at full speed, but it should still function with an expansion board on PCIe x4. Looking at the ASUS PRIME H610M-A D4, they claim NVMe will work if you connect it over a PCIe lane. That suggests another PCIe x4 expansion card could also support the SSD on the same lane—provided they're in the same lane. On both motherboards, the PCIe x16 is the only lane directly linked to the CPU, but the H610 has no dedicated NVMe lane on the CPU. It seems the designers had to come up with a custom solution. I hope this clears up my confusion...
