GW2 and CPU specifications
You're unsure if this forum is the best spot for your question, but you're experiencing some unusual problems with Guild Wars 2. You're considering upgrading your CPU and are curious about whether your current setup might be limiting performance. Your AMD FX-9590 at 4.5 and r9 290 at 1103 seem to be struggling, especially with low FPS and high CPU usage. You've tried lowering settings and even ran the game in Blender, but results haven't improved much. It sounds like your system might be optimized for different hardware, or there could be an issue with your setup. Regarding upgrading, replacing it with an i5 4690k could help, but whether it's worth it depends on your budget and expected gains. Let me know if you'd like more details!
I understand your point about the game being CPU-heavy. It really performs well with a few strong cores instead of many weaker ones. I usually run a 4790k and 970 at 1440p (just below max settings) and achieve around 50-60 fps in normal situations. Even at 1080p, the results are similar. Keep in mind a few things: 1) Don’t aim for more than 30 fps during intense world events—it’s an MMO and modern hardware can’t sustain that. 2) Intel processors tend to handle better than AMD ones because of their design; anything above the 4690k won’t give you much extra speed. 3) No matter what chip you choose, keeping it cool is essential; otherwise performance will drop due to throttling. If you need more details, I’m here to help.
Additionally, I explored the GW2 fourms and PCMR areas; the 9590 model shows several reported problems when playing the game.
