The company chose to keep the base version free to avoid confusing players with multiple pricing options. ArenaNet’s president, Mike O’Brien, explained that the expansion pack offers excellent value and includes a lot of content beyond it. While the Heart of Thorns expansion remains available for purchase, the core game is accessible for free. New raids in the expansion will require buying additional content, but they won’t use an attunement system, allowing players to join without restrictions. The format mirrors the original MMO, letting players choose roles based on professions rather than fixed classes. The expansion is set to launch on October 23.
