Hey everyone. I have a concept to assemble a server using outdated DDR3 components mainly to keep costs minimal. I’m curious about what would be the most economical choice in this situation, or if it’s wiser to invest in a more recent DDR4 setup. This idea might seem out of reach or overly ambitious, but whatever it is, my goal is to balance affordability with functionality. I’m aiming for a system that can serve as both a budget-friendly HTPC and a basic gaming setup, ideally supporting light titles at 1080p60. I’m not focusing on top-tier performance for gaming; the main aim is keeping everything cheap. In my mind, a hybrid configuration could work—two server instances running in parallel (using either FTB or a standard flavor)—with enough RAM to handle the load. The challenge lies in ensuring the hardware can sustain both tasks efficiently without breaking the bank. I’m considering using Xeon or i7 processors with plenty of DDR3 memory, since those are relatively inexpensive and widely available. While consumer-grade i7s might have fewer cores, they’re still decent for light gaming. The main concern would be how well the system handles simultaneous server operations and gaming tasks at 1080p. If the bottleneck comes from the graphics card rather than the CPU or memory, it could become a limiting factor. Overall, I’m leaning toward a practical approach that prioritizes cost-effectiveness while meeting the basic requirements.

I think a single core setup would work better but the i3 build still caps at four cores, which isn’t ideal for this scenario. For a DDR4 system I’d likely choose a Ryzen instead. Many of these older Xeon/i7 models are available with affordable combos around $200 (though probably not the 7700k). Also, can a 16GB DDR4 i3 really beat a 7-year-old Xeon with 64GB DDR3? These are my current thoughts. The focus should be on server performance.

When you don’t require 64GB, performance won’t exceed 16GB. Adding more RAM doesn’t always boost speed, except when handling memory-heavy tasks such as delivering a website to 1,000 users simultaneously. 16GB should suffice for this scenario.

The 10th Gen i3 could be a stronger choice if 16GB suffices, but a 4th or 6th Gen i7 might still offer better performance. DDR4 memory generally provides a noticeable boost over DDR5 in most cases.

The 10th gen i3 works fine for gaming but doesn’t have enough cores. A similar performance with higher core count could be a Ryzen 5 or something with 20 cores instead of the 10.
