I'm just starting out with overclocking. I recently attempted to boost my Gigabyte G1 970's performance to get more frames in games. I increased the core clock by 100mhz using Afterburner and ran Kombustor and Heaven Benchmark for an hour without any problems. The temperatures stayed just above 70°C.

Later, when testing some games, they all crashed within the first hour. I tried raising the voltage by 15mV in hopes of stabilizing the overclock, but it resulted in a black screen and a reboot. It seemed that many people achieved better overclocks without adjusting the voltage. Am I simply unlucky with an unreliable overclocker?

Here are my full specs:
Gigabyte G1 GTX 970 rev. 1.0 (ASIC quality 67.8%)
I7 8700 non-k
Gigabyte Z370M D3H
16GB DDR4 3000mhz
Cooler master RS550-AFBAG1-UK 80 Plus Gold Power

Desmond S shared his experience with overclocking. He attempted to boost the Gigabyte G1 970's core clock by 100mhz using Afterburner and ran Kombustor and Heaven Benchmark for an hour. Temperatures stayed just above 70°C. Later, when testing games, they all crashed within the first hour. He increased voltage by 15mV in hopes of stabilizing but faced a black screen and reboot. He noticed others achieved better overclocks without adjusting voltage. He mentioned his system specs included a Gigabyte G1 GTX 970 rev. 1.0 (ASIC quality 67.8%), an I7 8700 non-k, Gigabyte Z370M D3H, 16GB DDR4 at 3000mhz, and Cooler Master RS550-AFBAG1-UK 80 Plus Gold Power cooler.

Each match varies in sensitivity, particularly with Ubisoft and Squaresoft. Possibly just a bit of chance... Overall, around 100mhz works well on my M.S.I.970.

He provided his system details and mentioned that memory overclocking is more stable, while core overclocking can be more sensitive to changes. He also noted that older cores tend to resist overclocking, whereas memory generally allows higher overclocks. He advised being cautious when overclocking different games.

the most I achieved with OC on my GTX (EVGA GTX 970 SSC) was 450 memory and 75 cores.

In those times, people typically added 130 to 150 to the core. Was that the usual amount for a 970?
