GTX 1060 STRIX overclock help
Hi, I just bought the GTX 1060 Strix GPU, not the upgraded version. I manually overclocked it using some YouTube guidance, but I'm curious about how safe my settings are. The default clock speeds seemed pretty similar to the reference cards. I thought you only get the overclocked version with the OC model; I did enable OC mode in GPU Tweak 2, but it still didn't reach the same speeds. I decided to overclock myself. What confused me was hearing others claim they reached around 9.2ghz on memory clock, but mine is showing as 4000mhz—about 8ghz? That’s significantly lower than what others are achieving.
My current boost is +150, bringing it to roughly 2000mhz, and the memory overclock is near 9ghz, which matches what others have reported. However, I feel like it might be too high. The card runs smoothly but stays cool at around mid-50s. Yet it keeps drawing power between 100% and 105%, and I haven’t increased the voltage limit much because I’m worried about damaging it.
Is this acceptable given my approach? And what speeds did you achieve on your end? Thanks a lot for your advice, and sorry for being a beginner.
if you wish to attempt further improvements
just proceed gradually
separating the core work from the memory tasks
once artifacts or crashes occur, reduce the intensity slightly
and avoid applying any overclock settings when Windows begins until stability is confirmed
if you select those options, remember the override key in case needed
with Afterburner, press ctrl but you’re unsure which ASUS model uses
you can't blow it up lol
software overclocking doesn't really let you increase voltage much
it's nowhere near the level that would harm the card—especially with newer GPUs they let you add a lot less than older ones
lol i know, a bit of exaggeration but I just don't want to damage it
do i need to tone it down a bit or do you think it's okay where i have it right now?
i was actually hoping to push it a bit more which is why i wanted to see what others managed to achieve
haven't really overclocked before so i'm not sure how far i can go and i don't have the time to squeeze every single bit of performance out of it either
just a nice big improvement that's close enough to the limit but well within safety levels is what i'd like ideally.
if you wish to attempt more, try gradually
working on the core and memory independently
once artifacts or crashes occur, reduce the intensity slightly
and avoid applying any changes while Windows starts until stability is confirmed
if you enable those options, remember the override key in case needed
with afterburner, press ctrl but you’re unsure which ASUS model uses
If you wish to attempt further adjustments, proceed gradually. Separate the core work from memory tasks. Reduce settings slightly once artifacts or crashes occur. Avoid applying any overclock when Windows starts until stability is confirmed. Remember to note the override key in case needed. With Afterburner, use Ctrl but don’t know which ASUS model you have.
Hi Mate,
I followed your suggestions and successfully increased boost to +250 and memory to +650. It worked well initially—ran Unigine for an hour and Furmark for about ten minutes. I understand it should take around ten hours across multiple programs for full stability, but I’m short on time. Then I lowered it slightly to +200 boost and +600 memory. I hope this keeps the CPU temperature under 56°C.
Anyone else have any idea what the maximum stable overclock is for their system? That would give me some confidence I handled it properly without risking damage.
Thanks.
