Hello all! As you may know, the Steam Winter Sale is going to end in a few days and I still haven't bought anything yet. I pretty much exhausted all of my money and stuff on a basically brand new system (minus CPU and RAM) and I only have about $50 left. I want to buy an open world game with that money, and I was considering GTA V or Just Cause 3. I've always liked the open world gameplay and even though JC3 and GTAV are basically the same, GTA appeals to me more and I have no idea why. Here's a discussion question: which would you buy and why?

I own both games. GTA V and JC3 are quite different. I’d choose GTA V over JC3 mainly because of the multiplayer aspect, and it offers a broader range of activities like visiting strip clubs and getting high, whereas JC3 focuses more on protecting the island you’re in.

I've handled many JC3 missions recently, especially managing the narrative, though there aren't many activities beyond that. Speaking of destruction, you'll likely be focusing on blowing things up quite a bit. And soon enough, you'll be freeing settlements.

GTA TB captures exactly what I thought about JC: it keeps repeating the same goals in similar environments, offering a bunch of quirky tools and physics, then throws 50 million people at you to handle them. It’s really hard to manage anything meaningful because you end up relying on the simplest, most effective solution—guns. The gun feel doesn’t stand out or excite anyone. JC3 added these challenges, but they’re just less intense and more straightforward than the core experience.

I wouldn't think they look alike. Take Montana, for instance—it's mostly tundra and isn't completely useless. Actually, the level of randomness thrown at you is pretty entertaining; you often have to rely on weapons a lot. Fortunately, more forces appear to make things tougher, but the chaos itself is great. The rest are fine. Plus, they're not essential— I managed to complete the game with very few items.

They don’t look alike at all, the main similarity is that both are open worlds and you can use weapons and drive cars. I’d pick GTA V.

GTA5 offers superior graphics, a compelling story, enhanced 3rd person shooter gameplay, and more realistic driving physics. The environment feels more authentic and immersive. JC3 provides a larger world, improved flight mechanics, making it ideal for those seeking an intense ride. The narrative is standard and unremarkable, with missions becoming monotonous over time. It resembles a third-person adaptation of Farcry4. Both titles are decent games.
