The version you obtain matters. If you download from Rockstar Warehouse, you’ll typically have access only to the copies they sold there, not the Steam version. Playing with others who bought it from Steam would depend on whether their copy is compatible and if you’re using the same platform.

You stay connected with all players on the same system, regardless of where you obtained the game.

SwiftCraftmc explained that purchasing from R* means using the R* launcher, which mainly serves as a loading screen. Buying from Steam allows you to play with others who have it or with those using the R* launcher. Choose the option that offers the best price unless you need it on Steam specifically.

Absolutely, you're right. It's identical in Steam—just start it through Steam. Simple logic.

It's often more affordable on Rockstar Social Club mainly because users tend to keep it in their Steam library. Many people stream continuously just for automatic updates. I'm not sure if R* offers updates through Social Club, but I definitely don’t want the game running constantly. Plus, Steam friends, achievements, gift cards—there are plenty of reasons to choose Steam, though they aren't completely different.
