GPU stuck at 1x 3.0
GPU stuck at 1x 3.0
Hello everyone. Today after cleaning my computer I observed a significant drop in the frame rate and overall performance, which prompted me to investigate further. Eventually, I discovered that the GPU z was reporting it was running in PCIe x8 3.0 @ x1 3.0 mode under load. The CPU z also indicated a current link width of x1. I attempted all the known troubleshooting steps, but nothing resolved the issue.
I reset the GPU several times, updated the BIOS, refreshed the chipset driver, and cleared the CMOS. My system ran on:
- Motherboard - Gigabyte b450m k (v 2.0)
- CPU - ryzen 5 2400g
- GPU - rtx 4060
I then tried connecting two additional GPUs. The GTX 950 also worked in x1 3.0 mode, but it was unusual since the GTX 450 used 8 lines, which exceeds my CPU's support limit. Despite the GPU supporting PCIe 2.0, it remained stuck in 1.1 mode. It might be due to the GPU being quite old, and I should have manually selected version 2.0 in the BIOS instead of auto. However, since the GPU doesn't support UEFI, I wasn't able to access that setting.
So, does this mean I may have damaged either the CPU or motherboard, and now I'm left with a difficult decision—buy one of these components or risk purchasing something else? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Motherboard - Gigabyte b450m k (v 2.0) updated the BIOS
For clarity, mention the current BIOS version on your system.
My setup includes:
Motherboard - Gigabyte b450m k (v 2.0)
CPU: ryzen 5 2400g
GPU: rtx 4060
When sharing a troubleshooting thread, it's standard to provide full system details. Please list the specifications in this order:
CPU, CPU cooler, Motherboard, RAM, SSD/HDD, GPU, PSU, Chassis, OS, Monitor.
Also include the age of the PSU along with its make and model. BIOS version for your board at this time.
Apologize for the delayed reply.
CPU model: Amd RYZEN 5 2400g
CPU cooler ID: COOLING SE-903-XT
Motherboard: Gigabyte B450M K (rev 2.0)
RAM: 8GB x 2 ADATA PREMIER 3200 Mhz
SSD: Single Kingston A400 240G
GPU: PALIT RTX 4060 8 GB
Power supply: Deepcool PF450 (sorry, I don’t know its age, purchased it 1.5 years ago)
Chassis: Looks like a PC case? If yes — DEXP DC 201M
Operating system: Windows 10 22h2
Display: Connected via HDMI, but seems to be a TV from Samsung
BIOS information: From the Gigabyte website it states — FDg
The process included cleaning the computer, paying attention to the CPU and PCIe slot. It's unclear if the CPU was taken out entirely, as there might be bent pins. Given that the 950 also supports x1 speeds, it seems the contacts inside the PCIe slot aren't as pristine now. Use isopropyl alcohol and lint-free Q-tips to gently clean along the contacts.
I used thick paint brushes as I usually do to clear all the dust from the fan and motherboard. Yes, I removed the CPU during cleaning.
Successfully resolved the problem by downgrading the BIOS to AMD AGESA V2 1.2.0.8 (FA for my mobo). Despite the latest BIOS update AMD AGESA V2 1.2.0.E, the system still cannot connect properly with all intended lanes.
