Hi everyone I'm building a desktop for a friend, and have run into an issue I haven't experienced before. Relevant parts are: Ryzen 5 4500 CPU Gigabyte B550m auros elite motherboard Asus radeon rx 6400 dual 4gb GPU When placing the GPU in the "main pcie" port, the pciex16, there is absolutely no video signal at all. When placing in the pciex4, no issues at all. I want the x16 to work, due to spatial issues with other connectors.. Any idea why it's weird? I've installed windows, installed drivers and chipset for motherboard and gpu, aswell as updates the bios

The CPU/GPU pairing was quite poor. The RX6400 has just 4GB of VRAM and is only wired via PCIe x4, even though the connector is longer than x16. It depends heavily on PCIe version 4.0 for performance, but the R5 4500 only supports version 3.0, which limits its speed significantly. I’m not sure why it doesn’t work in the x16 slot—you might try changing it to version 3.0 in the BIOS if possible.

The selection came from financial constraints, and it was only practical at night—seemed reasonable given the cost when purchased in shops. Should we focus on the GPU or the CPU as the bottleneck?

CPU situation arises since it only supports PCIe Gen 3. The review highlights the AMD Ryzen 5 4500 and mentions the Radeon RX 6400 Express with PCIe Gen 3. It recommends upgrading to a newer CPU, especially since your motherboard already has the latest chipset.

I'm not confident the shop would accept it back after use, but I'll recommend it to my friend.

For the x16 slot, follow the advice from @Tegneren: manually set it to Gen 3 in BIOS. Also verify the BIOS version to ensure compatibility with your GPU performance. Remember, the RX6400 was launched long after the B550, so updating the BIOS on a B550 might have been necessary even for older models.

Referenced changes in BIOS are made, but I aim to configure gen 3 for the PCIE port.

No problem - I'll keep you updated once the port configuration is confirmed
