Hey there, I haven't used this in a while and need some advice on what to do with my PC right now. I'm thinking about whether to upgrade the GPU instead of getting a whole new system. My current setup is pretty basic—just enough for average games like Minecraft. I'd rather just replace the GPU rather than buy a new machine, especially since it wouldn't be worth my money at the moment. Could you suggest some upgrades that would help me save money without needing to upgrade everything?

just swapping a video card won't fix the issue.
unfortunately, your processor is limiting your performance too, along with slow memory.
your CPU will become a significant bottleneck even if you upgrade to a more powerful graphics card.
you might consider replacing it with an i7 7700K and overclocking it, which could help but isn't the best solution.
it would also be expensive since used i7s are quite costly.
what other games are you interested in besides Minecraft?
the best option is to sell your current setup and build a new PC from scratch.

That's something I might do if I really wanted to discard everything. I'm thinking about it now. Wouldn't it be better not to upgrade the GPU to a mid-range model like a 1660?

gtx 980 and gtx 1660 perform similarly, with the 1660 just being a slight improvement. A more noticeable upgrade would come from something like rtx 2070 super or 2080 in the used market, or a rtx 5060 from a brand new card. However, an old i5 CPU would still be a major limitation. Which other games are you interested in playing?

Sure, I can try to rephrase that for you.

Well, if you're looking to upgrade your current setup—like an i7 7700K and a 2070s—you might be able to maintain 1080p performance for a while. You could also attempt to boost your memory's speed a bit higher. However, this really depends on the games you plan to play. Even with these changes, you won't be able to run the latest titles at high or ultra settings with more than 60 frames per second. The i7 7700K in stock performance is similar to an i3 10300 or an i5 8600/9400F (though not exceptional). After overclocking, it might improve slightly.

With your motherboard and cooling system, you should be able to reach stable speeds of around 4.7 to 4.8GHz across all cores when under load. But this is only worthwhile if you can find a good deal—something that isn't easy in your area, where prices are still around 90-100 euros or more.

The RTX 5060 would be a better fit for your power supply because it uses less energy compared to older high-end graphics cards and offers more modern features with improved performance overall.

If you're considering an older high-end option from a second-hand market, it might be smarter to replace your power supply instead.

You might want to search carefully, as a good deal could exist on eBay. For instance, you could buy an i5 10600k and assemble it for around $160. At five to six years old, it’s still solid and would work well with a modern setup like an RTX 3060 12gb or an RTX 5060.

The 7600k could also be sold separately for $20 to $40, and you might sell your old CPU and board for $50 to $75, helping reduce some expenses.

yeah
not so long ago i was able to buy 12400f + b660 mobo as a combo for 130 bucks
on a second hand market place and i build a PC for a friend off of it .
there is a rather big IPC (single core performance) jump between 10th and 11th gen intel cpus
from haswell all the way up to 10th gen it was just a minor few % IPC improvement each gen up untill
11th gen was introduced .

I just did a quick check and found something interesting. Recently, I saw someone offering a Ryzen 5500 with an a320 board and 16GB DDR4 for about $175. It looks like there are usually good choices available if you look around.
