GPU fans continue to spin even when not in use?
GPU:
MSI RTX 5060 Ti Gaming OC 16GB
Hello, I performed a fresh installation of Windows 11 on a new setup with this graphics card.
Even when the system is still booting, especially in IDLE mode and with the newest gaming drivers, the fans continue to spin.
My previous ASUS 1060 model with 6GB of RAM stopped its fans completely, and I use this machine for work, so it was in idle mode 99% of its lifespan.
I recall that this GPU model should shut off the fans at idle. Anyone know what's going on here?
Thanks.
which nvidia driver version is currently active?
are you certain it's the gpu driver and not another component like fan?
could there be additional software installed, such as msi afterburner?
is the bios of your pc's motherboard up to date? which version is it?
does your gpu have a switch for silent or overclocking? make sure it's in the correct position. these switches sometimes don't stay fully in one direction.
MSI RTX 5060 with 16gb gaming OC doesn't include the zero RPM fan feature. Your previous model had it, but the new one doesn't. You might be able to use MSI afterburner to tweak the GPU fan curve and control when fans engage at specific temperatures.
supposedly MSI graphics cards feature Zero Frozr technology, which halts fans during idle. The latest driver version for gaming still allows the GPU fans to run, as I observe them spinning. I don't have an MSI afterburner; instead, I use Nvidia drivers, Gigabyte Control Center, and AMD Syntern faster software. The BIOS is the latest version, F9. It appears this GPU lacks any switch functionality.
My CPU fans are always running. Did you mean GPU? On my older graphics cards, they kept spinning nonstop. The first time I saw a newer card where the fans would turn off after starting, it made me doubt whether I had missed something important. Nowadays, I usually let GPU fans shut down when the card is idle, but I still wonder if they’ll kick back up when things get warm. Since my PCs don’t have transparent panels, I’d have to use software like Afterburner or remove a side panel to check the GPU fan speeds. I prefer fans that never stop, so I tend to buy ATX power supplies with a switch that stops any Eco mode. If equipment fans can’t last through the product’s lifespan, I think the maker probably didn’t invest in good quality. Personally, I’d be fine if my GPU fans never stopped completely, but some people prefer a nearly silent system. For them, a fanless (100% passive) PC might be the ideal choice?
Here’s a passive heatsink for a mid-range GPU, though it might still need case fans for a bit of airflow.

Then there are passive coolers like the Noctua NH-D1 or similar for mid-range CPUs, if absolute quiet is what you’re after. Not very attractive but completely silent. Of course, you’d still need a fanless ATX PSU and a big case.
