so i recently purchased a budget laptop around six months ago...it comes with an i5 10300h, gtx16504gb and 8gb ram. back then i could play games such as genshin, minecraft and valorant on it. the temperatures were usually between 68-75 degrees celsius for the gpu and the cpu never went above 80 degrees. however, about a month or two ago i started observing higher temperatures than before—my gpu would hit 80-85 degrees and the cpu around 90 degrees. that would have been okay if i was running a very demanding game, but it doesn’t make sense for genshin at that point.

i attempted to adjust the settings and even played at the lowest levels, but my gpu temperatures still occasionally climbed to 80-85 degrees celsius. this is concerning because higher temps can reduce the lifespan of the hardware.

when playing valorant the temperatures stayed mostly stable, though they occasionally reached 77 degrees. minecraft also behaves similarly. i tried gta 4, which is quite old, and it consistently shows around 80 degrees gpu temps, rising over time. i usually stop playing once the temps hit 80 degrees or more.

i also noticed apex legends reaching about 80 degrees, which is typical for that game. the issue seems to be that if i played games like red dead or warzone, 80 degrees would be normal. but playing genshin on low settings and gta 4...? it doesn’t make sense for my laptop’s gpu to reach that temperature.

is this indicating my laptop needs a repair, dust cleaning, or is there another reason? could the thermal paste have worn out after six months? or are there other factors at play?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!
Within six months, it's likely the vents in your laptop could have become blocked by dirt or debris. You might want to check the internal components and, during this time, consider reapplying a better-quality thermal paste than the one originally provided.
Also, verify your OS version (if you're using Windows 10) and check for any pending updates. Look for any BIOS update requirements as well.
You can also download the newest drivers from Nvidia's support page, then use DDU in Safe Mode and manually reinstall your GPU drivers via an elevated command—right-click the installer and select Run as Administrator. This might resolve the issue.
