Hey there, I'm just starting out with MMOs. I've only played Lord of the Rings online a little. I want to try some MMORPGs again but avoid those with monthly subscriptions. Could anyone recommend a free-to-play game or one that charges once per expansion? I'm looking for something with a good story, fantasy setting—think swords, magic, monsters, etc.—and the ability to progress solo as well as join parties for big battles or quests. It doesn't have to be the best graphics, but it should be decent. I was really inspired by the anime Sword Art Online, so anything similar would be perfect. Thanks for your help!

In my view, Guild Wars 2 stands out as the sole quality MMO without a subscription requirement.

Neverwinter and TERA are among the top free options I've found.

you're looking for a lot of free-to-play MMOs. while World of Warcraft is a top choice, it doesn't fit your needs since it's not free. Steam has many options you might like. check out this link.

Tera isn't great... it's not particularly enjoyable either. If you're looking for something to do, take a look. You might find it interesting at first, but it's likely to bore you soon.
