Good connection but slow response times.
Good connection but slow response times.
Hey, over the past weeks I've struggled with online gaming because of my high ping. My connection looks good—1080p60fps without buffering and everything seems fine—but my latency keeps spiking. I can chat on Discord and play games like League of Legends or CS:GO, but talking to friends is tough. Last night my Discord ping hit 11,000 ms, and even today it was fluctuating between 700 and 1000 ms. I checked everything I could: Ethernet cable, disconnected Wi-Fi devices, closed background apps, turned off firewall. Still nothing changes. Sometimes I get lucky with stable ping for a bit, but then it drops again. My ISP says my internet is fine and doesn’t seem to care about the numbers. I’m running out of ideas.
Ensure your device is restarted and connect directly to the primary router.
I don’t believe a restart is the solution here, even though I’ve done it several times. Many people mention high ping issues, but most are talking about values around 200ms, which is still quite bad. While you can move your character in some games, at 1000ms or more it becomes nearly impossible to control smoothly.
There is real possibility this issue is outside your ISP's network. Remember the internet is just a bunch of networks cobbled together. Your ISP might not have any way to fix the issue. Its not like they have a direction connection to the service your trying to connect to. For example Netflix is connected to the internet via Level 3, and they are only one of many of the backbone providers across the internet. The best way to track this down is to do a trace route in the cmd prompt and select the IP from one of the services your using. That will at least give you an idea if its you ISP being bastards or a network outside their control.
Sure, I can help with that. You're welcome to ask for guidance on any topic you need assistance with.
Verify the source of the lag. Check if IPv6 support exists. Run a Google IPv6 test. Everything seems okay? Launch cmd and enter: ping -t www.google.com What response appears?
You launch the command line interface. You input tracert followed by the target site or URL. Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.112] © 2018 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. C:\Users\dough> The output displays tracing details. Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.17134.112] © 2018 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
Check for high ping values among the devices. If some show issues, pinpoint the source. Assigning IP addresses should be transparent—identify who owns each one. If your provider is involved, demand answers. If the traffic isn't on their network, you're in trouble.
