I'm updating my intel board to an msi true gaming z390. My hp omen had an i5 7400 and would randomly shut down, only spinning fans before powering off. I thought it was the power supply, but when I swapped in a new evga 850w psi, it melted a VRM chip—see the picture. That’s why it would turn on instantly and then shut down. After it failed, I bought a z390 board from msi to replace everything. It’s showing the same issue: basic symptoms, one ram stick, no GPU, just CPU connected. Removing the CPU still keeps the motherboard active. What are the chances it’s dead or just a CPU problem?
Same issue persists even after swapping the motherboard, suggesting the original motherboard wasn’t the cause. Pebkac could indicate a problem with the same configuration. Check if any other parts were replaced besides the CPU—any faulty component might be the reason.
You're attempting to run an i5 7400 on a Z390 chipset—those aren't compatible. While they share the same socket, the hardware doesn't support it. You'll need a 100-series board with a newer BIOS or a 200-series platform for that processor. Recommended options include Z170, Z270, B150, B250, H170, H270.
I changed the RAM, CPU, and GPU while using Symptoms still works with just one RAM stick (it doesn’t matter which one). No GPU. This setup is built on a breadboard and not in a case. If I disconnect the CPU power it stays on, but if it’s plugged in it briefly turns on for about half a second before shutting off.
