To compete with the friends you placed in silver elite master, you need to understand how the system works. It's not about playing the game first; just joining with your friends in nova should let you participate at the same level.
It seems three positions above N defines the threshold for queuing. With a complete team, that threshold becomes irrelevant.
I’m not certain about the threshold but think it needs to be more than three points above and below. Last week my friends and I waited in line for an MGE, all of us Silver Elite and lower. Of course, we were a five-person queue—maybe that’s connected to the limit.
