Gigabyte G1 Gaming GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 CPU support available
I’ve been exploring compatible CPUs for the gigabyte G1 Gaming GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 motherboard. I found details about 4th and 5th generation Intel i5/i7 support, but information on 5th gen options was limited. The current board has a 4770K processor and I’m considering upgrading to something like the 5930K, which is a 5th generation chip. However, it seems the socket type matters—some boards use Socket 2011 while others use Socket 1150. Are there significant differences between these socket versions?
The 5930K won't fit on your board since it doesn't match the size of the 1150 socket. It belongs to Intel's High-End Desktop Whatever or HEDT lineup, while your system only supports popular chips like the i7 4770k, 4790k, and 5775C.
Intel's lineup continues to impress with its latest offerings. The "4th and 5th generation" likely covers Haswell and Haswell Refresh, such as the 4770k and 4790k chips. Only a handful of genuine 5th-gen processors reached mainstream desktops. The 5930k is built for LGA 2011-3 workstations, much larger than the LGA 1150 lineup and optimized for high-end applications with ample memory and PCIe features. Adding to the mix, all prosumer models are a generation ahead—so a 5930k is actually Haswell (4th), not Broadwell (5th). For that platform, you'd expect CPUs like the 6800k or 6950x. Server hardware lags slightly, with a v3 Xeon also being the 4th-gen option. Thanks, Intel!
LGA2011 (2011-3 or 2011 v3) is significantly bigger than LGA1150 and won't work together. People may refer to it as "4th gen and 5th gen," but not the full range of those generations.
If it already has a 4770k then I would say there is little reason to switch out the cpu as it is one of the best cpus you can get that is supported by that motherboard.
