Hello everyone, I'm just starting out with PC gaming and setting up my first gaming PC. I have a Ryzen 5 5600G processor, 16 GB of DDR4 3200Mhz RAM, an RX 6800XT in the top PCIe x16 slot, and a Gen 4 500GB M.2 SSD as the boot drive. My question is whether I can install another M.2 drive that's lower on the motherboard but connected to the chipset. I saw that using more M.2 slots might affect other PCIe components. The top slot is labeled for the CPU, and the bottom slot is Gen 3. Would putting a Gen 3 M.2 SSD there be a big issue? Could it really hurt the performance of my RX 6800 XT? I'm also considering swapping the boot drive to a larger Gen 4 SSD, but that sounds risky. I'm still learning and hope someone can help me understand these things better. This relies entirely on the motherboard’s wiring configuration. There are several possible setups: wires can go straight to the CPU, through a switch with another component, or via a chipset connection. The top M.2 port is typically isolated from other connections and won’t interfere with bandwidth. Option 1 refers to the main M.2 slot, which remains separate and doesn’t compete for data. Option 2 involves sharing bandwidth with other devices, such as a GPU that runs at x8 instead of x16, using extra lanes for different slots. This isn’t a fixed rule but can happen on certain boards like the B550 Master, especially when adding more PCIe Gen 4 slots. Option 3 describes what occurs in the second M.2 slot—SSDs must share bandwidth with other devices connected to the chipset, including SATA drives and USB ports. This limits performance if many devices are active simultaneously. Option 4 is similar to Option 3 but accounts for chipset restrictions that sometimes turn off certain SATA ports when a PCIe/M.2 slot is used. TL;DR: Placing an SSD in the second M.2 slot won’t affect GPU speed. Both slots operate at PCIe Gen 3, and using a 5600G with PCIe Gen 3 will cap performance regardless of which slot you use. Compatibility works both ways, though speeds will be constrained by the slowest connection.

You can easily move your PCIe Gen 3 M.2 SSD to the M2A slot and install the new PCIe Gen 4 one there. Since your M2B slot is currently free, you won’t need a USB adapter. Just transfer your data from the old SSD to the new one in the M2A slot, and everything will stay intact. This approach keeps your existing setup while upgrading performance.
Thanks! I moved the smaller original SSD to the second M.2 slot and placed the newer larger one in the CPU M.2 slot, and it all worked perfectly. Thanks for the support—it reassured me it wouldn’t affect my C: drive. The newer PCIe4 SSD can now use the CPU M.2 slot since the older slots were already PCIe3. I’ll keep these notes for future reference.
