I just installed this new motherboard (gigabyte B450M ds3H) with an AMD 3700x, a 500W power supply, and a GTX 970. The previous owner had the same CPU and recently updated the BIOS—it worked then. Now when I turn on the PC, all the motherboard connections lose power but the fans start up and there’s no display output. Even without the GPU, the IO remains inactive. Pressing the power button turns off the system, which shouldn’t happen if there’s a RAM issue. I’ve changed the RAM, tried different positions, cleared CMOS, removed and replaced the battery, and repositioned everything, but it’s still stuck. There are no diagnostic lights or sounds to guide me. What should I do next?
It's possible to insert a small speaker between the two front I/O pins marked SPKR. Have you experimented with a different boot drive?
All systems are off. No access to BIOS or motherboard display. Only fans are running. I have a backup speaker ready—I’ll give it a shot.
The Gigabyte B450M DS3H was mostly delivered with BIOS version F1. Unless you own first or second-gen Ryzen processors and use the right DDR4 speeds, it won’t function. The board lacks built-in diagnostic LEDs, complicating troubleshooting even more. The safest choice is to bring it to a shop for a BIOS upgrade. It may cost a bit more since the BIOS must be upgraded to F32 before moving to F40. At F32, reports suggest the system still freezes and struggles to reach F40. Some advise skipping F32 and going straight to F40 instead. I found a speaker inside, but it isn’t emitting a beep. Following the instructions, it should make one beep when it starts up correctly—anything else suggests an issue. This seems likely to mean it’s not working if you have other concerns. Any additional troubleshooting tips would be appreciated.
The prior owner had also used the 3700x, which might not be the issue.
The motherboard likely comes from a factory with an updated BIOS. The previous owner already ran the Ryzen 3700X, so they probably ensured the BIOS was current. Consider checking the GTX 970 or PCI-E X16 slot. Since the Ryzen 3700X lacks its own integrated graphics, the rear I/O ports like HDMI/DVI won’t help unless you have an APU. Verify the power connections from the PSU to the GTX 970—they’re essential and can’t be skipped. Try installing another GPU in the PCI-E X16 slot; if it works, the original might be compatible. Review all power connections (ATX 24-pin, CPU 8-pin, PCI-E, etc.) to confirm they’re secure.
You confirmed the BIOS was reinitialized upon delivery, which restored the device to its standard settings at F1.
