I have an i5 7600k and an asus z170-p. When adjusting the core ratio in the BIOS to 48, it boots normally, but CPU-Z only displays a maximum of 4.2ghz under full load, even though the multiplier range is x8 to x48. Is this typical behavior or a protective measure for the CPU? Thanks in advance.

i have an i5 7600k and an asus z170-p. when i try setting the core ratio in the bios to 48, it boots and works well, but cpu-z shows a max of 4.2ghz even though the multiplier is between x8 and x48. is this typical or a safety feature? could be thermal throttling. my temps are near 70 degrees celsius, and i'm unsure about vcore adjustments. i think it should have been much lower, around 1.2-1.3 max.

NickyCWario shared their experience with similar configurations. They mentioned using an i5 7600k and an asus z170-p, and noticed that setting the core ratio in the BIOS to 48 works well, but CPU-Z only displays a maximum of 4.2ghz under full load, even though the multiplier range is much higher. They wondered if this was normal or if it was a safety feature, asking for advice on whether thermal throttling might be occurring. They also provided their own temperatures, noting they reached around 70°C and were concerned about staying below 85°C during stress tests, with Vcore appearing stable and generally under 1.35V.

I'm not an expert on OC, just a beginner, but I think you might need to increase the maximum power the CPU can handle. I recall a similar situation when I updated my 4670k, I had to raise the CPU's allowed wattage.

NickyCWario :
So is this just an odd occurrence then and is there a way to more or less force it to go to the higher clock, I have turbo mode on which gets it to 4.2 but without means it only gets to 4.0.
Are you trying to overclock by adjusting your turbo ratio or a regular overclock?
I have turbo, speedstep, and c-states disabled when I overclock. Then I set Vcore to 1.35V (and enable enough LLC such that when i monitor Vcore in CPU-Z I don't see any significant drop or boost between idle and stress testing). Then I increase my multiplier one step at a time - run a stress test and see if it passes and temperature remains below 80C. If it passes then I up my multiplier and run again. If the stress test fails then I know I have raised my multiplier too high. If the temps are greater then 80C then I know I have too much Vcore. This is it in a nutshell.
If you have turbo disabled - are you saying you can't set a multiplier 44? (as an example) with a corresponding frequency in CPU-Z of 4.4G

I've turned turbo on most of the time but will try your method instead, as you seem familiar with starting this process and I'm adjusting the 'cpu core ratio' in my BIOS.
I own an Asus z170-p with 3017 v.
Update: The difference isn't there, the BIOS clock still doesn't match the CPU-Z clock.

I'm not an expert on OC, just a beginner, but I believe you might need to increase the maximum power the CPU is permitted to draw. I recall a comparable situation when I was optimizing my 4670k, I had to boost the CPU's allowed wattage.
I checked as well, but there doesn't seem to be an option available anywhere I can find.

Consider testing cpu-z on the bench tab. This tool helps compare performance differences between 4.8ghz and standard speeds.
The system may show inaccurate data when using new configurations.
