He bought an ASUS ROG STRIX B250G and wants advice on choosing a mid-range gaming PC. Since CPUs usually cost the most, any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

According to what I understand, this board is compatible with Intel CPUs up to the 7th generation. Was it purchased secondhand? You might be able to get it. It could offer a more affordable and efficient setup using AMD now.

MB was considering a used Intel Core i7-4930K 3.4, but since there are many versions of the i7, I’m not sure what to look for. We’re really new to this stuff. Appreciate your help!

The board features Socket 1151 and is compatible with 6th/7th generation Intel processors. You must use an Intel CPU from that era with the correct socket. The i7-4930K belongs to socket 2011, making it unsuitable. Opt for an i7 6xxx or 7xxx instead. Check the board's details at the provided link and consult Intel's Ark page for precise CPU specifications: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...0-ghz.html

The CPU isn't compatible with the motherboard. Below are supported CPU options: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG...pDesk_CPU/

Check your nearby used shops for CPUs from the 6th and 7th generation. You won’t be able to overclock these boards, so you don’t need to hunt far afield for a high-end CPU. An i7 6700 or 7700 would be perfect—they still perform well in games.

Looking at the options, those prices—7600k, 7700, 7700k, 6700, 6700k—will likely be the best choices for your board. Just skip the very first ones; they’ll work fine. I’d check out the Reddit Hardware Swap to see what’s available, as they often offer great deals but act fast. For me, I’d keep spending under $60 on the 7600k and no more than $120 on the others.

Intel's naming system is quite clear. The first digit after i3/i5/i7/i9 indicates the CPU generation. For example, a Core i5 3 570K belongs to the 3rd generation, while an i9 9 900K is from the 9th generation. Generally, higher numbers mean newer chips. If you're targeting the 6th or 7th generation, you might want to consider your budget for the GPU. If the games aren't too intense, the CPU's built-in graphics could suffice.
