I’m setting up a home network across your mother’s property. My goal is to share connectivity while keeping traffic separate so she doesn’t stream on your TVs or print to your printer. I’ll start simple and add complexity later, like isolating IoT devices. Here’s how it could work:

- ISP connects to your mom’s house.
- Router creates two VLANs (one for you, one for her).
- Router sends those VLANs down via a managed switch.
- On the managed switch, VLAN 1 hosts her wireless APs (she only uses Wi-Fi).
- VLAN 2 connects to a wireless bridge that routes traffic to your home.
- The bridge brings in your house and connects to another managed switch.
- The second managed switch provides an extra AP for your wired devices, helping separate traffic on your side.

I’m flexible with equipment choices and want reliable, budget-friendly gear. Let me know if you’d like suggestions or adjustments!

Ideal setup would be a wired link via the ground rather than a wireless bridge. It would be great to have everything controlled through one unified interface, similar to Unify.

Looking for some gear ideas? The router seems to be the biggest challenge for you.

Assign distinct VLANs to separate ports on the router: port 1 for VLAN 1, port 2 for VLAN 2. Connect router port 1 to a switch at your mother's residence, and port 2 to a switch inside your home via wired connection. Eliminate wireless usage along this path, ensuring devices linked to both switches operate on isolated networks.

Looking for a compact device running OpenWRT or Mikrotik? This model suits you well if your internet speed is near Gigabit. For higher performance, consider a more powerful router.

I’m hoping I can complete the wire installation, though my mom’s specialized tank is getting in the way. The Ethernet length seems too long. Please share your thoughts on the right equipment.

It's currently around 100mb, but fiber plans at 1Gb are in the works. Running a Plex server and doing 4k streaming at home means traffic shouldn't overload the router. Using multi-mode fiber from your mom's house could help.

Using Ubiquiti gear with Unifi feels great, though it comes at a steep cost. I previously recommended more affordable alternatives.

LAN devices linked to the same switch maintain communication inside the switch, avoiding unnecessary routing through the router.
