I just installed a new Windows Home 10 Pro copy using the media tool and set it up without a key since I planned to do it later. Surprisingly, there was no watermark at all. However, when checking activation settings, it showed I didn’t have a key. This is my first time building, so I’m unsure if this is typical. I bought a key but can’t return it—do I still need it? Anyone have any advice?

It's typical for the watermark to disappear for a week or two, then reappear. Simply enter your key.

It doesn't always appear right away. My experience has been inconsistent—sometimes it shows instantly, other times it remains hidden even when not enabled. Just try activating it and it should work. Over the past few years, I've observed that personalization options are consistently blocked, not just after a 30-day delay. It seems this feature has changed over time.

Windows 10 starts in trial mode without a product key. This trial lasts for 30 days. After that, a watermark appears and you can't use personalized settings.

You're running Windows 10 on a trial version, as mentioned by @Chris Pratt. That's confirmed.

On my latest Windows 11 setup, the key remains hidden for a week, yet disappears after just two hours of startup.

=Cleaned = You may mention low-cost options, but avoid endorsing them.
