I possess a n100 mini PC running as a server that I’d love to reach from outside the house. Ideally, I want to connect using Microsoft Remote Desktop on my iPhone and MacBook. However, my internet speed is fast but doesn’t allow port forwarding, and the public IP keeps changing. There seems to be no straightforward way around the firewall to enable this. I considered a PIA dedicated IP—it might work—but I’m unsure. I also saw TeamViewer’s options, though they’re now quite expensive and have limited support for unattended access. Chrome Remote Desktop isn’t reliable on iPhones and only functions through a subpar web app. My needs include several services: a download server with PIA in WireGuard mode, an alternative Windows setup for my MacBook at home, an IP camera/printer access via AirPrint on an old Samsung laser printer, and a stable environment for those tasks.
Sharing RDP connections over the public internet poses serious security risks. It opens the door for unauthorized access. For remote desktop without setup, Parsec is a solid choice—it's similar to how TeamViewer originally worked. If you must use RDP, establish a VPN for better protection.
