Gaming on Linux
Gaming on Linux
I was curious about how many people have experimented with this. I began soon after Linus posted the video, diving in thoroughly. It’s been quite an engaging journey so far. I’ve played several games now, and it really varies—this week my friend and I attempted Borderlands 2. Previously, it worked perfectly on Linux via Steam Launcher, but when we tried to play together on Windows, we encountered version mismatch issues. Switching back to Windows resolved the problem, allowing us to play together smoothly.
Other programs that aren’t meant for Proton often perform surprisingly well. For instance, I purchased YNAB (why you need a budget) on Steam and ran it through Proton without any issues, except for Dropbox not functioning properly.
Linux support is growing in games, though it's not fully established yet. Most titles remain Windows-based, and many AAA games are still exclusive to Windows. I initially tried Linux for gaming but eventually moved to Windows since a large portion of the games I wanted to play didn't function there. If you're okay with playing only certain games and facing multiplayer or version problems when playing with friends, it might be worth trying Windows. You can experiment with Windows and switch back if needed, but it's clearly the better choice for gaming on Linux.
Unless you're taking it as a lighthearted endeavor, it doesn't seem like anyone would invest time in the trouble (especially when games are available for free or cheaply online).
mainly it concerns needing to repair computers running Windows 10 continuously, I experience flashbacks while playing games at home. Windows works fine, but it's still not a smooth gaming experience—I can only sit through updates while trying to play. Linux has its quirks and issues, yet it keeps functioning once set up, and most updates won't disrupt existing changes. Honestly, I've lost interest in Windows; I switched to Linux as my main operating system about six months ago, and so far I only revert back for specific games or when working.
