Gaming issues without a BSOD crashing your PC
In the last year or so I've faced problems with my PC freezing while gaming. It doesn't trigger a BSOD, it's like someone reconnected the power cord and plugged it back in, except the fans keep running and the system restarts. Previously it was just a rare issue every few months, but now it's happening multiple times weekly. It mostly occurs during certain game actions: picking dialogue choices in Disco Elysium, moving for the first time after loading in Escape Simulator, or pressing the start button in AC: Unity—the only crash I've experienced happened exactly twice in the same way.
Since then, my PC has crashed repeatedly, most recently in Space Engineers. I've checked Event Viewer and Reliability History after each incident, but found nothing significant except a critical error about an abrupt reboot. I ran Memtest86 without issues, Prime95 didn't crash, and CrystalDiskInfo shows healthy drives. The latest .dmp file in the minidump folder was updated in 2022. I've also verified the PSU cables are secure.
My PC is quite old, and the GPU seems limited by the CPU. It was built in 2014 with RAM and GPU upgrades since then. I plan to replace it with a new CPU, motherboard, RAM, PSU, and SSD in the future, which should resolve the problem. Right now, the slow HDD boot is the only concern. Any suggestions or possible causes? Thanks.
