Hey everyone! With summer on the horizon I’ve got extra time and some extra cash. I’m searching for a long-running survival game that feels like it takes ages to finish. I really enjoyed 7 Days to Die, so I’m after a similar progression style experience where you begin with nothing and can build amazing things—cars, gadgets, whatever you imagine! ARK comes to mind too, since it starts from scratch and lets you reach incredible goals. But the $60 price tag is something I’d prefer to skip if possible. Any other recommendations? Thanks!

Do you prefer solo, teamwork, or competitive gameplay? The Forest stands out as a single-player and co-op experience available for $20 on Steam. You begin on an island following a plane crash, tasked with constructing shelter, collecting food and supplies, establishing a base, and exploring the area. The map offers a solid size with numerous underground caves to discover. There are also some unusual encounters—naked cannibals outside your shelter who watch you with a curious expression, similar to a child peeking through a bakery window. Firearms or cars aren’t included; only axes, spears, bows, and arrows are allowed. You can even craft a raft for travel.

One-player mode is available, with co-op as an optional feature. Played The Forest, but it didn’t quite suit me or was played through too few times. Perhaps a fresh try would help.

Minecraft Space Engineer offers a pleasant experience for fans of sci-fi titles. Additionally, Frostpunk, developed by the creators of This War of Mine, delivers impressive visuals and solid gameplay.
