Hi - I tried to boost my RX550 by +90 mhz but ended up leaving the slider in MSI Afterburner at its maximum. After some playthroughs of GTA 4, it crashed immediately to 480p with all settings turned down and stuttering issues. I assumed the card was dead, though it was just aging. Now a GTX 1060 6GB Mini is on the way. Recently, after installing the new GPU and updating drivers, GTA 4 still defaulted to 1080p but kept stuttering, only reaching around 40-60 fps. With a 1060 card, those numbers should be higher at 100 fps in 1080p. Could you help me figure out what to do?

Hello - it seems like reinstalling Windows resolved the issue, and everything is working properly now. It might have been the process that thoroughly cleaned the system drive and eliminated potential causes of the stuttering.

Certainly! Here is a rewritten version of your text:

1) Many individuals incorrectly turn on Afterburner to automatically apply their previous configurations when logging into Windows. Have you done this?
Some also have the application activated to launch upon login, which is unnecessary and should be disabled.
2) Did you use the Display Driver Uninstaller to uninstall the outdated driver before installing the new one?

My MSI ab tends to auto-start when WinFowd begins.
It also applies profile 5 during MSI ab startup.
When MSI ab is disabled in Windows, my 1080ti fails to apply its custom fan curve and doesn't show any on-screen display.
What effect does auto-start MSI ab have on performance?
If MSI ab doesn't run properly, I don't see the fan curve and the throttling occurs at 84 c.

I used DDU but didn't leave the MSI AB setting to start at boot. I think it might be due to my power supply being too weak (310w), which could cause the system to cap the GTX 1060's performance.

No, but if a recently applied and saved overclock isn't genuinely stable and is left to start automatically with Windows, then it can definitely cause issues.
I only use my saved profile when necessary. When I'm not playing a game, the GPU runs its default fan curve: fans are off and it's idling at 45-50C, which isn't a concern for it.

Yeah, that would be an issue. The psus in prebuilts are meant only for the original equipment.
The accidental overclock likely caused the psu to fail, and then it ended up damaging the GPU. Without fixing it, you'll be left with no options.
These GPUs can be handled through software, but other hardware might be able to do it too.

Alright, so I used the "separate psu" method to power the video card, but for some reason it's still stuttery. Even though I got the card used I'm 100% sure it's not bc of that, because the eBay seller said it was used lightly for a year. Could this be bc the power supply that originally came in the machine is so damaged by now that even though the video card is connected separately, the motherboard and the rest of the connected components are suffering bc of it? Would getting another OEM psu with higher wattage help? (I'd get a name brand one but the one in my machine has some special connectors that the normal ones don't, forcing me to buy it from HP)

We should obtain a visual sample. Please click the green human to proceed - UserBenchmark
Share the URL of your results.
Download and run Gpu-Z: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
Open Sensors, keep the app running, and play your games. After about 10 minutes of play—this will capture some stutter activity—take a screenshot. The camera icon in the app will be useful for this.
