Gameplay smoothness and occasional lag issues reported in Far Cry 5.
Good afternoon everyone, I've just begun playing Far Cry 5 (though I'm pretty new to it) and noticed some strange performance issues. When running benchmarks without VSync enabled, the game caps at around 125 fps, averaging 117 fps with a low of about 73.7 fps. It was set to ultra resolution, 1080p, using my system specs listed below. I believe this setup shouldn't yield such results in this title, and checking CPU and GPU usage shows the CPU reaching roughly 45% while the GPU hits 60%. I increased the resolution to 1440p, which improved GPU utilization to about 75-80%, but kept the frame rate similar. When VSync is turned on at 60Hz, the game stutters to a max of 60 fps, an average of 59 fps, and a min of 57 fps. With VSync off, it appears choppy, dropping from 60 to 59 fps each second. Despite this, my system resources remain within normal limits, including RAM usage. I'm puzzled as none of these components are being overwhelmed, yet the game still behaves this way consistently throughout play. Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.
Hey, these include service host operations, runtime brokers, security authority actions, NVIDIA container management (which keeps me stuck), Bluetooth drivers. Almost every Windows process I’m not sure about turning off. I’m also struggling to close Ubisoft services since they’ve led to problems before.
I have a similair/same problem. I noticed it in 3 different games so far. There is stuttering after starting the game. After about half an hour or so it seems to stabelize tough. I noticed it first in Anno 1800. Seemed to be a sound stutter there because the graphics stutters where small enough to be unnoticed. So I assumed it was a problem for Anno. Then it also happened in planet coaster. Same sound stutter with noticeable smal graphics stutters. Also after some time it would be stable again. And last it happens in Elite Dangerous. Noticeable sound and graphic stutters stable after a little while. I have my PC connected to a samsung 65' TV via displayport to HDMI. It only refreshes at 60Hz at 4k. Could that be related? And would that mean some sort of hardware bottleneck?
I've noticed consistent frames in certain titles when using the maximum settings at 1080p and 1440p on my 2080 Ti. The most affected are GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Far Cry 5. After installing the games on my R7 5800X, I'm averaging around 127fps in the benchmarks. Both my R7 and the 2080 Ti are stock units. With continuous GPU overclocking, the average climbs to about 134fps. If the game runs on a slower HDD, it can lead to stuttering. I stopped using even 7200rpm HDDs for gaming back in 2007 (especially for titles like MS Flight Sim) and switched to faster 10,000rpm drives until SSDs became affordable. Even a moderately slow HDD can cause stutter in some games due to Windows behavior. It's simple to test—just disconnect it.
Honestly, it’s worth giving more thought to the hard drives in my PC. The main drive spins at only 5400rpm, which is low for handling most games. I plan to move it to an SSD to check if that improves my performance. It’s strange since I’ve experienced stutters with many titles—like AC Ezio Trilogy, Far Cry 5, and Gears of War 4—but not always. The Witcher 1 also stutters, though it seems more related to CPU limits than the drive itself. If I swap the game onto an SSD for testing, I might try your suggestions with the HDD as well. It’s frustrating spending a lot on powerful hardware only to run into old issues again.
The games you referenced are designed for open worlds and load progressively, which means performance will gradually decline. Installing high-resolution texture packs, such as those available on the setup screen in Far Cry 5, can reduce stuttering during starts. Even standard drives like 7200rpm ones may cause noticeable lag over time. These systems store data in small chunks rather than large blocks like textures. I previously used a WD 5TB Black with 7200rpm and it worked well for my regular games but caused issues with modded titles, leading to stuttering. About four days after purchasing the WD Black, I upgraded to a 2.5 SATA SSD, which eliminated all the lag.
