Hi everyone, this has never happened to me before. Now I’m starting to notice it in a few games—like MW2 beta, 7 days to die, and Forza Horizon 5. All the times I’ve played on this same PC before, nothing’s been an issue. I found that lowering the resolution (1440p to 1080p) and reducing game quality seems to help it run smoothly. Still, I dislike having such high settings because my graphics card feels like it’s struggling. The temperatures are normal—games are running without overheating, usually staying under 75°C. I think the problem might be related to heat buildup, maybe something burning inside. I’ve stopped it before it crashes every time someone uses it, but I didn’t realize it was happening until my son started playing Forza and I wasn’t aware. Any advice would be really appreciated!
Do you have a power source available? It seems the setup may not support the 3080, so you’ll need at least a 750-watt unit connected directly.
I own a 750w power supply that I've used consistently since installing the card, so there hasn't been any change. It only crashes after I notice a burning smell, which I think might be from the GPU memory, though I'm not sure why it's happening suddenly. I've checked with Open Hardware Monitor for temperatures and power usage, and everything looks normal, but I can't see the GPU memory temperature. If this is the issue, what should I do?
Consider HWiNFO and GPU-Z. You might be correct about VRAM temperatures—I remember skipping a Zotac model around 3 to 4 years ago when a friend lent me an artifacted GPU. The Zotac 1060 had no thermal pads installed, and after some research now:
Thanks a lot for the assistance. I managed to retrieve Vram temperatures from GPUz, reaching up to 84°C on the VRAM. I noticed a plastic odor and the game closed immediately afterward. It’s unclear if 84°C is the rated temperature, but it seems like it should be safe.
GDDR6X tends to overheat, with temperatures reaching 84°C still being outside safe limits according to Micron. The manufacturer states the maximum safe operating temperature is around 95°C or 105°C.
