I have a problem with playing games made by Unreal Engine. This started happening recently and only affects these games. For example, No More Heroes 3, Soulstice, and a Bionicle fangame made in UE4 all crash for me. None of the other games I play lately or frequently this way stop working properly. When I first played Soulstice about a month ago, everything worked fine. I could play it for an hour or two with no problems. Even after playing through the entire Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes without crashing, another game made in UE4, things were okay until then.
Suddenly, starting No More Heroes 3 and playing for about an hour caused a crash with a box that just said "Fatal Error." I tried to restart it, but it crashed again after twenty to thirty minutes. The crashes became more frequent from that point on. About a week ago, I started trying Soulstice, a game that used to work fine and now also crashes with a "fatal error" after about 30 minutes. That was happening just before yesterday. Yesterday, I managed to play the Bionicle UE4 game for two or three hours without any issues, but today it simply wouldn't open when I try to start it. It shows up in my task manager under "Background Processes," but it doesn't actually launch an app. Starting No More Heroes 3 leads to a black screen on startup and says it's not responding in the task manager.
To put it simply: used to be able to play Unreal Engine games without issue, now they either crash or refuse to open at all. Usually with no error message sometimes one that just says "Fatal Error." Any game NOT made in UE seems to work fine for me. My computer specs are like this: AMD Ryzen 3200G, Gigabyte GTX 1660Ti with 6GB of graphics memory and 16GB of RAM running on an M.2 SSD while games install to a hard drive. I would really appreciate help figuring out what the issue is since I can't figure out any catalyst or cause behind these issues like updates to the OS or graphics drivers. I have already tried things like running as admin, setting it to borderless windowed or windowed modes, compatibility mode for several versions of Windows, and updating AND rolling back my graphics drivers to multiple versions without a positive result on anything. Please let me know if there is any other information you think I should include in case help is needed.
I was told this is a way to absolutely reset your PC, and clear out anything that might be in the RAM and whatnot. That merely discharges any static build up by removing any residual power. You have a multitude of BIOS versions pending upgrade, I'd gradually work up to the latest as opposed to jumping onto the latest. Just be sure to avoid BIOS version L3.64 [Beta] as that contains the dreaded A.G.E.S.A code 1.2.0.5. Some might suggest that you should jump all the way to the latest, you're free to do so, but I tend to play it safe, considering motherboard makers don't include a changelog for their BIOS versions. Welcome to our forums! Can you tell us which operating system you are using? If it is Windows 10, what specific version or edition you have? For your GPU drivers, did you use DDU to remove them completely before reinstalling the newest ones for your discrete graphics card? What makes and model of your power supply unit, along with how old it is? And what make and model do you have for your motherboard, plus which BIOS version?
I'm sorry, but I knew I should have shared most of the details already. By then, I was so exhausted that my post felt too long. To begin with, yes, I did use DDU when installing drivers. The OS is Windows 10 version 19044 build 2130, and the motherboard is an ASRock X570M Pro4. From what System Information shows, the BIOS reads P1.90 dated September 10, 2019. I've never had this specific problem before, so I'm not sure if this info helps you too much. My power supply is a Corsair CX550M Semi-Modular ATX that's about three and a half years old. Something else caught my eye today: after unplugging the computer and pressing the power button a few times, people told me it was to reset everything like RAM. Even though I don't know if this is true or not, when I turned the PC back on, the games actually worked for just a while. Their performance felt terrible compared to before, but NMH3 crashed with that "fatal error" in minutes. Is this related to my GPU perhaps? I noticed that Wolfenstein 2017 keeps telling me about out-of-VRAM, even though it never gave me trouble recently.
Wow, thank you so much! I ran a scan and it said there were corrupt files that it couldn't fix. I used a Windows Repair Tool that had worked for me in the past to repair everything, and the games are working just fine it seems. Even the most troublesome one hasn't crashed for about an hour now, which is a big improvement over crashing every few minutes or not even launching at all. Thank you so much, I really would have never thought that of all things, the OS could be causing problems like this.
