Game performance drops sharply with high resource consumption
Hi there! I've been using this PC since early 2021 and haven't had major issues until recently. Since last month, my games have slowed down significantly without any clear reasons. My setup includes an NVIDIA 1050 Ti graphics card (though it's outdated) and an Intel® Core I5-3470 processor running at 3.20 GHz. Even with low graphics settings, a game now uses about half my memory. I've checked the task manager report when a game is running or paused to see how much RAM it consumes, but the suggestions like updating drivers, checking CPU temperature, and scanning for viruses haven't helped. I'm feeling really confused and would really appreciate some guidance on fixing this. Thanks!
The game itself doesn't take 49% of memory, that 49% is a sum from all the memory usage by the apps listed there. Based on the pic you uploaded, the game only uses 1,6GB of RAM. Try closing Discord. I think I've heard somewhere that there was a point where Discord caused stutter in game. How's your CPU, GPU, and DISK usage when gaming ?
Thanks for your message. I appreciate your patience. I’m still trying to understand how things work, especially with CPU and GPU usage during games. It seems like my system isn’t using much power—only 40-50%—and the lag started only recently. I tried turning off Discord and other apps to check if it helped, but the improvement was minimal. I’m not sure if the problem is with my hardware or something else. Have you encountered this before? If so, which components might need attention?
It's fine, everybody makes mistakes. Are you using HDD or SSD ? How was Disk usage ? Was there anything you installed before the stutter began ? How's CPU thermal ? Are you testing this (before and after stutter started) with the same game ? Seeing that you can still game, no sudden restart, crashing or whatever. IMHO it's less likely that it's a hardware failure.
Apologies for the delayed reply. I have an SSD C drive and an HDD d drive (I’m not sure what that means). The disk usage while running the game is just 3%. The only software I installed is Nvidia GeForce, but I’m unsure if it updated a driver. I removed the GeForce driver from my programs via system management, but it didn’t resolve the issue. My CPU temperature is at 38 degrees, tested on Coretemp, and the game behaves the same as before this happened.
