Game begins to lag after roughly 40 minutes of playtime.
Hey everyone. I’ve been facing an issue with my newly built PC and need some guidance. The setup includes an i7-6700k, ROG Maximus VIII Hero motherboard, 2x8GB RAM (Ripjaws), Asus Strix GTX 980 Ti (6GB), 500GB SSD, and a Corsair H100i GPU connected via w_pmp with CPU fan and CPU overclock settings enabled. Initially, everything runs smoothly at full settings. However, after about 30-40 minutes of stable performance, the game starts to lag, stutter, or freeze, even when settings are reduced. The GPU temperatures stay around 68-72°C, which seems normal. I suspect the problem lies with the hardware or a configuration I missed. I tried changing games, but the issue persists—no smooth gameplay at all. I’m also curious if the monitor might be the culprit, especially since my Samsung TV is connected via HDMI in titles like GTA V or Assassin’s Creed Syndicate. My friend with a weaker rig still enjoys perfect performance. Could the HDMI cable be faulty or if there’s another factor at play? Any suggestions would be super helpful. Thanks!
You explored the system quite thoroughly, but only 8 GB of RAM seems to be the limit. Most games should work just fine on that, but a 16 GB setup would have been more ideal for handling the RAM constraints. Performance issues like stuttering could point to a need for a better monitor, especially with that GPU. It makes sense to invest in a quality display rather than risking a poor TV experience.
He possesses 2 sets of 8GB memory, resulting in a combined total of 16GB
Start by turning off any overlocks and check if the problem continues. Use MSI after burner or another similar tool to monitor your PC's activity, including temperatures, CPU/GPU usage, memory usage, etc.
It occurs in some games but not every one, especially with Arkham Knight which has issues.
I just repaired my friend's PC, which had someone else assembled it. The 2x8GB ripjaws RAM wasn't placed in channel 1 on the motherboard, but rather in channel 2. This likely caused performance issues for RAM usage during tasks. After moving them to the correct first channel, everything improved. He was experiencing similar problems—drivers were up to date, games stuttered, and settings stayed minimal. I also checked the case and found the same thing, plus I removed the GPU and confirmed all pins were properly seated. It might have been a guess, but it seems to have resolved the issue.
So far, it only happens during gameplay. I’ve seen some YouTube clips and videos about using the TV, but mostly just play games on it while other content appears on the screen. I haven’t watched a full movie to check for issues. Regarding apps, everything functions well when the TV is the main display—Mozilla, Chrome, YouTube, Word, and Adobe all work fine. The problem seems to be just gaming itself.
